In the Edo period, during the Genroku era which is considered the Golden Age of this period, is when the Kyo-Yuzen dyeing technique was created. The Yuzen dyeing technique with its bright and gorgeous colors, the graceful patterns of the beauty of nature, embroidery and use of gold leaf, has fascinated people for more than 300 years.
First, pick up the brush and try dyeing with the beautiful colors. You can sense the elegance of Kyo-Yuzen, even if it’s just a little.
Kyo-Yuzen Workshop Studio Marumasu Nishimuraya has been in business since 1908.Anyone can come and enjoy Kyo-Yuzen at a classic Kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse).
After deciding what kind of item you want to decorate, you can choose from over 3000 different stencil designs and start your Kyo-Yuzen workshop! Apply the brush to the stencil using a swirling motion and fill in the whole stencil. You can use different colors and switch layers after finishing one layer. After you finish all layers, your stencil is finished.
Other than the Kyo-Yuzen workshop, we also have five other hands-on workshops offered by our Kyo-Yuzen craftsmen including making your own chopsticks and furoshiki wrapping.
In our store MAYU, you can find products made with traditional Kyo-Yuzen but with a modern twist. Marumasu Nishimuraya carries handcrafted products that have many varieties in shapes, colors and patterns. These products are not only fun to look at, but also useful everyday items, gifts, and Kyoto souvenirs. Come and find an original gift for someone or for yourself!
